Breakwater Bistro
Location Location Location!
Any day that one visits this friendly eatery with the million dollar view is a great one, even (or especially?) when the seas are rough!
Recently, on a windy day, I popped in with a couple of friends for a tasty breakie. We enjoyed our meal but this place is really about the what’s happening outdoors!
I love the close proximity to the Ogden Point Breakwater (totally wheelchair accessible with robust railings to allay the nervous among us).
This makes it a great excuse to grab a coffee, or an ice cream from the shop below, and stroll the breakwater pier to the lighthouse.
Plus the new renos along Dallas Road with walking and cycling paths, bright Adirondack chairs strategically placed to relax and soak in the views (and maybe the waves on a really windy day like ours was), and the wheelchair-accessible picnic tables, and you have an accessible adventure in the making!
From the cafe you also have the view of the cruise ships at the adjacent terminal (when they return after the pandemic).
Why not stay a while and grab a tasty bite in the bistro... you won’t be disappointed with your day out!
What I love:
heated patio
tasty food (but limited vegan options)
helpful and accommodating staff
a sunroom offering near panoramic views of the Juan de Fuca Strait and its marine traffic, the Olympic Mountains, the nearby shoreline, and sea life sightings
Below is a newly renovated Tasting Room that features live music, and there are picnic tables in front to enjoy the fresh sea air!
Accessibility Features:
No stairs! The accessible entry on the waterfront side features a ramp. There are accessible parking stalls in the parking lot on the north end of the bistro, though you have to come to the south side of the building for the accessible ramp.
But there are also very wide accessible parking stalls along Dallas Road at the south end of the bistro.
The tables are well spaced and it is all on one level. There is a large wheelchair-friendly unisex bathroom, note the slight bump over the threshold at the front door. There is not an automatic door opener.
Final Verdict:
A must do for locals and visitors alike, the Breakwater Bistro is a Victoria fave.
Pair it with a journey along the waterfront or down the pier, and you have a fantastic, delicious day of adventure in the making!
