Mosi Bakery Café & Gelateria

Nestled in the countryside, 15 minutes from downtown Victoria, is an award-winning Italian inspired café, bakery and gelateria known as the Mosi Bakery. A must-visit for the flakiest, most delicious croissants (both sweet and savoury), plus decadent brownies, bars, cookies, meringues, and sticky buns that you have to taste to believe, both the cinnamon and the pecan are equally amazing!

For those looking specifically for breakfast, the delightful “buns on the run” are very popular: a fried egg in a focaccia bun with a variety of stuffings. Several Eggs Benedict choices, as well as traditional breakfast options are sure to please all. Nourishing soups (fresh daily), salads, sandwiches, sausage rolls, chicken pot pies, pizzas and paninis are on offer for the lunch crowd. The ham and fontina cheese croissants are absolutely delicious. And the vegan salted chocolate chip cookies are to die for! My favourite of their soup flavours, which can also be purchased by the litre from their in-store cooler, is Cream of Portobello mushroom. Believe me, you can’t possibly go wrong!

There are a number of gluten-free items on hand, and many excellent looking vegan options as well. The gelato counter has inventive flavours, such as Seamist Sorbetto. However, I would strongly suggest leaving the calorie counters at home (they are boring anyway, LOL!)

ACCESSIBILITY

The skinny on accessibility: The Mosi Bakery Café is located in a 100-year-old farmhouse, and as such is not truly accessible by today’s standards. However, for those in smaller mobility scooters and wheelchairs, it is possible to access the bakery. The business, which is a converted family home, is surrounded by an elevated porch with tables and chairs.  The sloped porch can be accessed on the side of the building so that the stairs can be avoided. A very small threshold at the front door exists but is easily negotiated and once inside, the bakery is definitely somewhat cozy. It is difficult to navigate through the line up of customers to get to the narrow space where the service counter is, but the staff are accommodating, and will likely assist you to order from an easier place.

As one moves beyond the bakery section, the area gently opens out into a charming, bright seating space. Beyond this area, there is another smallish eating area but it is one step down. One extremely important detail is that the bathroom is entirely and fabulously roomy and accessible, though navigating your way to it can be challenging. The wooden kiddie high chairs were blocking the hallway when I was there – aargh!

VERDICT

The bottom line: an unforgettable experience that I most highly recommend. The servers are courteous and friendly. The restaurant is clean and stocked with delicacies that are second to none. There is tea, coffee and an array of beverages to suit all tastes. Wonderful looking loaves of bread shamelessly beckon at you from behind the counter (you can’t say I didn’t warn you!)

Don’t let me forget to mention that the gelato IS truly award winning. Quite simply, it is divine. With an array of original and flavourful creations, treat yourself to a scoop or two of creamy bliss. Nobody’s watching – I promise!

The covered porch wraps around the farmhouse, offering outdoor seating that is accessible from the side, so the centre stairs can be avoided.

The bathroom is challenging to navigate through the hallway to, but once inside it is fabulously roomy and accessible!
