Feeling like a yummy breakie, brunch or lunch feed with a funky and fabulous greasy spoon kinda feel?

I popped into Spoons Diner for brunch recently with a friend and had a delicious $17 chef’s creation for free.

Yep, I said that. Free. You can too.

Let me back up for a second.

Have you been to Spoons Diner yet?  I’m only asking because they’ve been around for close to 12 years, but are located in the somewhat dingy old Ingraham Hotel on the corner of Douglas and Topaz.

Doesn’t matter.

At Spoons they pride them

selves on serving up comfort food extraordinaire with a gourmet twist. If you’re familiar with Victoria’s famous Floyd’s Diners (and you should be, just sayin’), then you know what you’re in for with Spoons. We’re talking delicious food, large portions, and great service.

What I love about it Delicious food, large portions and great service!

My friend and I were feeling daring and settled on an order each of ”The Prusa”, which is basically handing over the reins to the cook and telling them to surprise you. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

I took a trip to flavour nirvana with my seriously yummy eggs Benedict-like dish, which featured two eggs with chicken breast and savoury chutney, on toasted English muffins topped off with sriracha sauce and a very generous portion of crispy breakfast potatoes. Yum.

My friend ended up with a triple decker breakfast sandwich (think delicious sausage, veggies and cheese omelet on a bun) with a bowl of creamy mushroom and bacon soup on the side.

OK, let’s go back to the free thing. The Prusa is unique in the sense that  if you’re feeling lucky, you can flip for it. Double or nothing! I flipped and the planets lined up somehow because I came out of there not paying a red cent for my brunch - yay!

Time for a word or two on the excellent service. Every time I have gone to Spoons I have found the servers to be very friendly and super efficient. Please recognize that in a normally crowded and very busy restaurant, that is saying something. This past time I visited, Covid restrictions were in place and there is a lot more space in the joint. It made for a really pleasant dining experience but I’m also good with the chaos, haha!

Accessibility Factors

Spoons is located on the ground floor of the Ingraham Hotel so there’s not a stair in sight! The waitstaff are extremely accommodating and happy to move tables around in order to maximize comfort and accessibility for those in chairs and scooters. Free parking is available on site with an accessible spot located right by a ramp that is very close to the entrance of the restaurant. Accessible washrooms are located in the hotel lobby around the corner from the restaurant entrance.

The Verdict

No brainer! Spoons is a great place for a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch. Be ready for a generous portion served by the friendliest waitstaff in a funky and colourful retro themed eatery, loved by locals and visitors alike.
